Lydney Tennis Club’s open day on July 13th ,timed to coincide with the end of Wimbledon, was the most successful ever – despite the hot weather. All four courts were in constant use during the morning session and club coach, Fraser Drew, was kept very busy. Ages of participants for this free event ranged from 4 years to adult. Flagging energy levels were revived by an all day barbecue run by Nigel Salter.
The fun continued into the afternoon with a mixed senior/junior club tournament. Each pair had to consist of an adult and junior partner for this doubles competition. The courts were busy again as six? pairs fought it out. In the final, Dave Reid and Kostner Lane emerged victorious against Nikki Salter and Matt Leach after playing a very exciting match.
On Saturday afternoon July 20th was the annual Ann Bayliss Tournament. It was a beautiful afternoon and fortunately not quite as hot as the previous week –but hot enough! This was a mixed singles event and most of the entrants were teenage club members – can’t think why! Twelve players played in four groups and the winner of each group went forward to the semi final. In the final Harry Hale met Matt George in a very tight contest which could have gone either way. It was only decided in a final tie break when Harry managed to snatch the last few points. Well done to both for such a high quality match at the end of three hours of sweaty tennis.
