Finals of Club Championship at Lydney Tennis Club
Saturday September 14th
Saturday’s event was the culmination of three weeks of competition and began with a group photo of as many of this year’s participants as could be rounded up. A good crowd turned out to cheer on the players, enjoy the barbecue and soak up some afternoon sun.
The Junior Final was between Harry Hale and Niall Davies. In a closely fought match full of long rallies and lasting almost two hours, Harry won 6.3, 3.6, 6.1. The quality and energy of the match was a pleasure to watch and a testament to the current strength of junior tennis at the club.
In the Ladies Singles match Nikki Salter (stalwart of the Ladies A team) lost out 6.0. 6.4, to talented 15-year-old Beth Wilson. Spectators were entertained by some great rallies and line-hugging cross court shots.
Nikki and Beth were back on court for the Ladies Final. After two closely contested sets, it was ‘business as usual’ for the Wilson sisters (Jenny and Beth) who won out against Nikki Salter and her ‘A’ team partner Jan James, 6.4, 6.4.
In the Men’s Doubles, teenagers Harry Hale and Matt George gave a good account of themselves against Dave Reid and Rich Dobbs. In an exciting match full of accurate volleying and brilliant passing shots, all four players were finding the lines in a closely fought match. At last a blow for the ‘oldies’ as Dave Reid and Rich Dobbs came through 6.3, 6.4
In the Mixed Doubles Nikki and Harry made their third appearance of the afternoon, this time as partners against Cindy Ieli and Rich Dobbs. After two entertaining and closely fought sets, Cindy and Rich won 7.5, 6.2.
The standard of tennis moved up to a different level in a thrilling Men’s Singles Final between Fraser Drew (25), and Rory Wheaterton (18). In a gripping and high quality contest over three close sets, which could have gone either way, the match was finally decided by a couple of unforced errors and Rory won 6.2, 7.6, 6.4.
